rocknruin This album is on par with the high weirdness of encountering The Cantina Band scene as a five year old, but slowed down and in reverse. A sublimely astonishing masterpiece. Favorite track: "Curious Music II" I. Shalom (Peace Be With You), II. Silk III. Catalogue Of The Universe /(The Conversation).

mitch reynolds Incredible timeless music. I'll never understand how every sound comes from a guitar, but what an achievement. Huge recommendation for fans of Heldon, Ashra/Gottsching, Fripp & Eno <3

about

Curious Music is an ambient guitar record conceived by members of Sydney bands DEN/Exek during the changing of the seasons circa lockdown 2020. The fuzzy, downer headspace and cyclical feel that the duo explore across the two tape sides draws parallels with the work of fellow practitioners Jon Collin or G.S. Schray.

Sailing the course set by British post-punk hoaxers Deux Filles and building a sound world that will appeal to all hermetic six-stringers with a penchant for reverb, this is couchlock music of the highest order. Eerie, spectral noises flit across the stereo field and make 35 minutes somehow feel like a lifetime (and we mean this in the best way possible). Michael Grossman and Jai Morris-Smith allude to a fascination with early musical experiences informing their making of Curious Music, a break from louder, more punk-focused projects and a tragic boat accident tying the duo into a shared musical bond. The spacier compositions of Pascal Comelade also ring true here as a reference point, no matter where you try to ground your ears the phasers are set to disorientate. Guitars are used to mimic bursts of sound one may associate with a trumpet or a piano rather than riffing off the norm, the sound design explained as process of curiosity and experimentation. Grossman is a studio mixer / producer based in Marrickville, Morris-Smith has been playing in Sydney rock bands for close to 15 years.

Michael plays in Sydney band DEN.

At the start of 2020 We were meeting up frequently for coffee.
Originally I approached Michael to record a solo ambient / experimental guitar record for me during these meetings.

Michael has his own studio he built in Marrickville. He is a Studio mixer / Producer.

My sister Matika died suddenly in the January of 2019 in a boat accident.
During this experience, I found my self unable to listen to "punk or loud music”, I continued to play record and perform with Exek.

A few studio visits in I asked if Michael would like to do this record with me as a duet collaboration. There was a strong musical connection & understanding of each other that was there from the beginning.

We began experimenting in the studio,
Playing guitar to appear to represent other instruments Trumpet Saxophone Piano Harp etc.

We often Talked at length about music we listened to as children, music essential that was passed through both of our families.
In a sense we both returned to our earliest memories of music, I guess within that space we were both able to unlock a more creative approach rather then being confined to making cool music accepted by our peers and instead searched for something more honest.

The studio was filled with laughter from odd ball experiments, To bewilderment when the “magic” chord or note was hit that would open the music entirely into another world.

In brief this is curious music.
